Blanc fixe more than an extender
Blanc fixe was known for a long time
as an extender for coatings and plastics. However today Blanc fixe is gaining more and more the character of an
indispensable additive. Key technologies in designing tailor-made Blanc fixe grades are adjusted precipitation and
physical or chemical secondary treatment to create desired particle sizes ranging from some tenths of a micron down
to the nanometers, inorganic coatings or outstanding dispersibility.

Clean surfaces by utilization of the photocatalytic effect
With improved environment, thermal insulation of houses and increased sensitivity towards the use of chemicals nature strikes back: cleanness of outdoor surfaces becomes a problem more and more.
It has been proven, that for example algae growth can be controlled as side effect by the use of the chemically inert pigment zinc sulfide. The mechanism behind is the photo-catalytic formation of traces of soluble zinc. In contrast nano-fine titanium dioxide exploits a different photo-catalytic effect: The absorption of UV –light by the band structure of this semi-conductor leads to the formation of hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide finally.
Pros and cons of both ways are discussed. Necessities and limits with respect to formula-tions, like media resistance and influence of further solids are given.

fixe as spacer the efficiency of titanium dioxide can be improved by some percent and its loading reduced
accordingly without any adversely effects on other properties.
The use of Lithopone combines spacing with
hiding of an alternative white pigment which allows for example replacement rates of about 30% of titanium dioxide.
With the use of Sachtolith titanium dioxide can be replaced completely with more technical than economical
advantages for certain application like UV-curing coatings, thermally stressed polymers or glass fiber reinforced
plastics.
